  Chatrooms and ICQ

You may already have made new friends in virtual communities like chat rooms and ICQ. You may consider this really cool, but the downside is that it is easier for you to make friends with all kinds of strangers, good and bad.

It is important to understand, no matter what the circumstances, that you should not disclose your real name, telephone numbers, or address. Take precautions if you must meet your net-friends ¡V everything they have written online could be a lie. Meeting in a public place like a library or a restaurant is much safer than somewhere remote or quiet. The watchful eyes of your parents or your friends can also be a tremendous help in thwarting a predator's plans. At the very least, notify your parents regarding the details of your meeting so that they have a place to start looking in case you go missing. Know your limitations and give serious thought to the consequences of your actions.
