  01 - 'What and Why' in the use of Internet

 

Objectives  
This lesson encourages students to examine the reasons behind their Internet usage and how they spend their time online in order to raise awareness and self-criticism.

Description  
Activity Approx Time Needed
Activity - The Ultimate Website Award (P.4 - S.3)25 minutes
Activity - The Cyber Ethics Survey (P.4 - S.3)40 minutes
 
1) Activity - The Ultimate Website Award (P.4 - S.3)

Approximate time needed: 25 minutes

Aim:
To review on students' favourite Internet usage.

Procedures:
StepDuration(minutes)
1Each student propose one of his/her favourite websites.5
2Students browse through the websites and select their favourite ones. Using a voting ballot, they should provide three interesting aspects of the nominated websites.5
3The teacher should count the votes and announce the winning website (the "Ultimate Website"). The student who made the winning website's nomination should be presented with a gift.5
4The teacher can then lead a wrap up discussion.10

Analysis:
The teacher should pay attention to the students' reasons regarding their choices.

2) Activity - The Cyber Ethics Survey (P.4 - S.3)

Approximate time needed: 40 minutes

Aim:
To have students self-examine their state of mind while engaging in the Internet activities.

Procedures:
StepDuration(minutes)
1Divide the students into 8 groups (approximately 5 students per group).2
2Each group is provided with an A3 paper and a worksheet with the heading "Why is the Internet attractive to me?"3
3Each group should write down as many attractions as possible.5
4The group with the most points is the winner and would be presented with a gift.5
5Each group is required to comment on their own answers. Students are encouraged to share their views.20
6Teachers can then lead a final wrap up discussion.5

Analysis:
Teachers should review students' sharing and make a final wrap up analysis.

Remarks  
This lesson acts as a warm up for the following CESY lessons. Teachers may complete both of the activities or select one activity for the purpose of arousing students' interest in discussing their Internet experiences.
