| You should encourage your children to search for useful material on the Internet. They can learn a lot by browsing websites. It helps them to learn things which cannot always be found in school books. However, you should also teach them not to be gullible, believing everything they hear, see, or read, but to verify content if they have any doubts. Not all content on the Internet is reliable because many sites are personal websites containing the author's personal opinions. It's like reading the same story in two different newspapers; the essence might be the same, but some of the facts and the interpretation of the facts might be reported differently in each paper. Try to be aware of the ideology of the writer, the corporate sponser of the website, and other signs that a website cannot be taken at face value. A reliable alternative would be to purchase a set of encyclopaedias on CD-ROM and use various library books to verify the information you read on the Internet. |
